Turai Moong Dal Recipe, How to make Turai Moong Dal

Turai moong dal also called as turiya moong dal is one of the most healthy and nutritious dish. This has a bit of sweetness which it gets from turai which is combined with spices and lentil to form a great recipe.
Personally I prefer making this recipe with skinned lentil, as it’s healthier. You can make it with plain moong dal/yellow lentil as well.
If you are following this under Jain recipe category, skip adding ginger and follow rest of the recipes.
Serves: 2
Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup diced Turai/rigid gourd
  • ¼ cup Moong dal with skin/Split green lentil
  • ½ tsp grated ginger
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp. oil
  • ¼ tsp. turmeric powder/haldi
  • ½ tsp red chili powder/lal mirch powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder/dhaniya powder
  • ¼ tsp garam masala
  • ¼ tsp cumin seeds/jeera
  • ¼ tsp lemon juice
Direction:
  1. Rinse the moong dal with water. Soak it for half an hour.
  2. Wash, peel, and dice the turai/rigid gourd.
  3. Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let it splutter. Then all chopped green chili, grated ginger, turmeric powder and coriander powder followed by the moong dal. Add red chili powder and mix well. Add ¼ cup water and salt. Simmer covered for about 5-7 minute.
  4. Now add chopped turai/rigid guard and mix. Cover and cook for 5 minute.
  5. If required add some warm water.
  6. Finally add garam masala and lemon juice. Mix well and turn off the heat.

Serving Suggestion:
Garnish turai moong dal with coriander leaves and serve hot with roti/parantha or thepla. It can also be served with hot rice topped with some melted ghee.
