Vrat
ke chawal is popularly known as Samvat
rice or Samo. It is known with
many other names like Mordhan or Moraiyo or swang ke chawal or samak
rice or bhagar or barnyard millet. Samvat rice are small in size compared to regular quality
of rice and eaten during fasting days.
Navratri
is a festival where devotes who are fasting prefer to eat simple food without
onion and garlic. Those who don’t prefer eating salt during fasting, this is a
choice of recipe.
Vrat
ke chawal ki kheer tastes similar to regular rice kheer or rice pudding. This
sweet kheer is rich, creamy and grainy from cooked rice.
The
other recipes made with samvat rice are samvat pulao, samvat khichdi, samvat
idli and many more. I will share other recipes as well.
Step by step Samvat

- Take 2½ cups whole milk in a heavy bottom pan and boil it. Once the milk start to boil, add soaked samvat rice to it. Stir it and once the mixture starts boiling lower the heat.
- Simmer till the samo rice gets cooked properly. It will take about 10 minutes. Stir the kheer after every 2-3 minute.
- Add
sugar, cardamom powder and mix. I have added 3 tbsp. of sugar.
- Add
chopped raisins and nuts.
- Cook for another 2-3 minute and you will see the kheer gets thickened. Turn off the heat.
- Serve
it garnished with some raisins and chopped almonds.
