Sprouting Moong/Mung beans, How to Sprout Moong Beans at Home

Sprouting Moong beans with pics:
I have never ever used a sprout maker for sprouting any beans, as making sprouts at home is easier and better. I always make moth(matki) beans, mung beans, and other mixed beans sprout at home.

Moong beans grow really fast as compared to mixed beans.

Sprouting moong beans method 1:
(In this method we sprout the beans in a thin damp cotton cloth)
  1. Take a 1 cup of mung beans rinse and soak it overnight. The next day, drain the water from the soaked moong beans.
  2. Take a wet thin cotton cloth and keep the soaked moong beans in the cloth. Tighten this cloth and keep this in a covered container for 1-2 days.
  3. After a day, you will see small sprout and they will grow after 2 days. For longer sprouts, you can keep it for one extra day.
Sprouting moong beans method 2:
(In this method the moong beans are sprouted in a bowl or a container)
  1. Take 1 cup of mung beans or the amount you want. Clean it.
  2. Now wash it 2-3 times in running water.
  3. In a bowl take the moong beans and add a cup of water. The water should be an inch above the moong beans as shown in pic.
  4. Cover the bowl and soak it overnight.
  5. The next day discard the remaining water. The beans will swell.
  6. Cover and keep the bowl for 2 days. You can check after a day and you will see the sprouts appearing.
  7. After a couple of days you see a nice long moong beans sprouts.

The sprouts stay fresh in the fridge for up to 2 days. So you can keep them in the refrigerator if you don’t intend to use them on the same day.

Whichever method you use, once the beans are sprouted you can use it to make your favorite recipe. You can even eat it raw or even make sprout moong bean salad. Or use it as an accompaniment with chaat snacks like dahi papdi chaat or pani puri.

Some notes to know:
  • You can use any of the above methods to sprout the beans.
  • Always keep the container at dark and warm place like a kitchen cabinet.
  • Whenever the moisture in the kitchen napkin dries up, you have to sprinkle some water on it.
  • I always prefer using a bowl or container rather than cloth as u can always check the sprouts in a day or so. But for the cloth method, you cannot open the cloth. But you can see the sprouts coming out of the cloth, especially if you are using thin cloth.
