A
tortilla is type of soft, thin flatbread made from wheat flour, originally
derived from the corn tortilla.
Making
homemade tortillas has been so easy to me, as it is just the same way we make
our Indian bread/phulka/roti. The only difference being the flour tortillas are
made with wheat flour.
Flour
tortillas are a staple dish of the Mexicans. This homemade flour tortilla
recipe makes warm and soft tortillas perfect for soft tacos/quesadillas or
burritos. You will never use store bought tortillas again.
Step by step homemade
flour tortillas recipe:
- Combine the flour, salt and baking powder together in a large mixing bowl.
- Add butter and combine to make bread crumb like mixture.
- Gradually knead the dough adding little water at a time until the dough comes together and becomes smooth.
- Knead well for about 5 minutes. This will make the tortilla fluffy and soft when cooked on the skillet. Cover and let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape them into balls.
- Preheat the griddle on medium to high heat. Flatten these balls with the palm of your hand. Take a portion of the dough, dust it with flour and roll out into thin circle to approximately 6-8 inches in diameter.
- As you roll them out, you can keep tossing the dough in dry flour while rolling; this will prevent it from getting sticky when rolling them out.
- Place the rolled tortilla on the hot griddle.
- In a few seconds you will notice that small air pockets start to form. At this point flip the tortilla.
- Flip over again and cook the both side pressing lightly with a napkin or a spatula.
- Light golden spots will appear on both the sides.
- Remove from the heat; place the tortillas on the flat plate. Continue the same process for the remaining portions of the rolled dough and keep stacking the tortillas one over the other.
