Step by step Lauki chana dal recipe:
  1. Clean and wash 1/3 cup chana dal and soak it in enough water. Keep it aside.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add 2 cups chopped bottle gourd, drained chana dal, ¼ tsp salt, a pinch of turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp grated ginger and 1½ cup water. Cook on medium flame until 2 whistle.
  3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a pan. Add jeera, when it splutters, add chopped green chilies, curry leaves and tomatoes. Stir fry till fat separates.
  4. Add red chili powder, garam masala, dhania powder and mix well.
  5. Once the pressure is released, open the pressure cooker and add the cooked bottle gourd and lentil mixture to the masala in the pan and bring it to boil.
  6. Simmer the curry for about 7-8 minutes, then add coriander leaves and turn off the heat.
  7. Serve hot Lauki Chana Dal.

Lauki chana dal- a mildly spiced curry of bottle gourd and split Bengal gram

INGREDIENTS (measuring cup used, 1 cup=240 ml)
  • 2 cup Lauki/bottle gourd/ghiya
  • 1/3 cup Chana dal/Bengal gram lentil
  • ½ tsp ginger, grated
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder/haldi
  • ¾ tsp salt or as per taste
  • 1½ cup water
  • 1/3 cup, tomato, chopped
  • ½ tsp green chili, chopped
  • 5-6 curry leaves
  • ¼ tsp, cumin seeds/jeera
  • ¼ tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp coriander powder/dhania powder
  • 1½ tbsp. Oil
  • 1 tsp coriander leaves, chopped (hara dhania)
DIRECTION
  1. Clean and wash 1/3 cup chana dal and soak it in enough water. Keep it aside.
  2. Meanwhile, wash, peel and dice bottle gourd (lauki) into small pieces.
  3. First slice a piece of lauki, taste if it’s bitter. If it’s bitter discard it. It’s not good for health so discard it immediately.
  4. In a pressure cooker, add chopped bottle gourd, drained lentil, salt, a pinch of turmeric powder and 1½ cup water. 
  5. Cook on medium flame until 2 whistle.
  6. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a pan. Add jeera, when it splutters, add green chilies and tomatoes. Stir fry till fat separates.
  7. Add red chili powder, garam masala, dhania powder and mix well.
  8. Add the cooked bottle gourd and lentil mixture to it and bring it to boil, and then simmer for about 7 minutes.
  9. Turn off the heat and garnish with coriander leaves.

SERVING SUGGESTION
Serve hot Lauki Chana Dal garnished with the coriander leaves with roti/paratha or rice.
