Aloo Halwa Recipe for Vrat, How to make Potato Halwa for Fasting

Potatoes are the most commonly used ingredient in fasting food. You would have made potato wedges for fasting, but have you tried potato halwa. The aloo halwa is usually had during fasting. This halwa is delicious as well as can be made in no time. It is really a simple recipe.

 In this recipe while adding sugar you can add ¼ to ½ cup milk and roast it for more 5-7 minutes. Adding milk can be skipped as potatoes has enough moisture and tastes good without it too.

Step by step aloo halwa recipe:
  1. Wash 2-3 medium sized potatoes properly and boil it. Once it cools down, peel and crumble it or mash it with a masher. This recipe was made with 1½ cup of mashed potatoes.
  2. Then in a pan pour 2 tbsp. ghee and let it get warm. Fry 2-3 halved cashews till golden for garnishing. Remove and keep it aside.
  3. Put the crumbled potatoes in the ghee and keep stirring with a spatula on medium heat for 8-10 minute.
  4. Then add 3 tbsp. sugar and chopped cashews, almonds and resins.
  5. Mix everything well. At this time stir the halwa regularly and it will take 2-3 minutes to be ready.
  6. Lastly put ¼ tsp cardamom powder and mix well. Turn off the heat.
  7. Take out the halwa in a serving bowl and garnish with the cashews.
  8. Serve aloo halwa hot or cold. It will taste good both ways.

INGREDIENTS (measuring cup used, 1 cup=240 ml)
  • 2-3 medium sized potatoes 
  • 2 tbsp. ghee
  • 2 – 3 tbsp. sugar or as per taste
  • ¼ tsp cardamom powder
  • 5-6 Almonds
  • 5-6 Cashews
  • 1 tbsp. Resins
DIRECTION
