Veg Hot Dog, How to make Vegetarian Hot Dog

Making a veg hot dog was always in my to-do list and finally last week I made it, and it was a hit. My little one always insisted me to make this dish at home and so I gave it a try. I used soya chunks which is a good protein source. You can replace it with paneer or tofu.

When you want to cook something on a lazy weekends or when you are tempted to eat something different apart from regular dal roti, go for it, very filling and delicious treat for all vegetarians. It is perfect for lunch, brunch, dinner or even for potlucks!!

Kids can be notoriously tough to please. Try this mom-tested recipe to turn them around that will lead to fuss free meal in no time. 

Step by step vegetarian hot dog recipe:
  1. Boil 2 cups of water in a pan. Add 1 cup soya chunks to it. Let it boil just for 2 minutes and turn off the heat. Cover it and keep it aside.
  2. Once the soya chunks cool down, squeeze excess water out of it. Then mince it in a blender.
  3. Take 2 tsp oil in a pan. Once hot, add onion and chilies and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add in ginger and garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
  5. Now add in minced soya and mix well. Sauté for 4-5 minutes till the raw smell leaves from soya. Add in all spice powders and give a toss.
  6. Remove this to a bowl and let it cool down. Now add in mashed potatoes and chopped coriander leaves. Mix well.
  7. Take a portion and roll it into long patties. Heat up the pan over medium heat. Add a tsp of oil and shallow fry the patties till it gets nice golden crust from all the sides.
  8. Make sure to flip patties once in a while.
  9. Now to assemble hot dog: 

  • Once all the patties are shallow fried, butter hot dog buns inside out and roast on the same skillet till it gets nice crust.
  • Take one of the roasted hot dog bun and place a hot dog Pattie between it.
  • Stack green bell pepper and onion on the side of hot dog.
  • Add tomato and mustard sauce on the hot dog patties.
  • Serve hot.

A vegetarian way of making hot dog

INGREDIENTS (measuring cup used, 1 cup=237 ml)
  • 2 medium sized boiled potatoes
  • 1 cup soya chunks
  • ½ cup onions, chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder/dhania powder
  • ½ tsp cumin powder/jeera powder
  • ½ tsp garam masala
  • 2 tbsp. coriander leaves/cilantro, chopped
  • 2-3 tbsp. corn starch or as required
  • 2 tbsp. bread crumbs (optional)
  • 3-4 hot dog rolls
  • 2 tsp + 2 tbsp. Oil for pan frying

For garnishing-
  • Tomato sauce
  • Mustard sauce
  • Chopped bell pepper
  • Chopped onions

DIRECTION

NOTES
  • You can also add veggies to the patties mixture, like grated carrots, finely chopped bell pepper etc.
  • Along with mashed potatoes, you can add crumbled paneer or tofu.
  • Some varieties of potatoes have a lot of moisture, which makes the patties very soft and won’t form proper shape. You can adjust the consistency by adding little more cornstarch and some breadcrumbs.
