Oats Khichdi Recipe, How to make Oats Khichdi

Oats Khichdi is a healthy choice for a perfect breakfast or dinner. It is also a complete meal in itself for everybody. It’s a quick fix after a long tiring day!

Oats are low in saturated fat and very low in cholesterol and sodium. It is also a good source of dietary fibre.

What better way to gain strength and energy to carry you through a hectic morning schedule than with a steaming bowl of freshly cooked oats khichdi.

Step by step oats khichdi recipe:
  1. Take oil in a pressure cooker pan.
  2. On low to medium heat, add cumin, mustard seeds and asafoetida and let it crackle.
  3. Add onion, peanuts and green chili. Cook till they become light brown.Add tomatoes and cook for 2 more minutes.
  4. Add turmeric powder and red chili powder.
  5. Add sprouts and vegetables and mix well. Add salt.
  6. Now add oats and approx. 3½ cup water to the pressure cooker and stir properly. Close the lid.
                                                                                     
  7. Cook on medium heat till 1 whistle. Turn off the heat.
  8. The Oats Khichdi is ready.

Oats Khichdi- a complete meal

INGREDIENTS (measuring cup used, 1 cup=240 ml)
  • 1 cup Oats
  • 1 cup Sprout Moong
  • ¼ cup peanuts
  • 1 small Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Tomato, finely chopped
  • ½ cup mixed vegetables, chopped (carrots, French beans, peas etc.)
  • ½ tsp. Green chili, finely chopped (optional)
  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp red chili powder
  • ¼ tsp mustard seeds/ rai
  • ¼ tsp cumin seeds/jeera
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 tbsp. oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Some chopped coriander/cilantro leaves

DIRECTION
  1. Take oil in a pressure cooker.

TIPS
If you are making this recipe for kids, green and red chilies should be skipped.
After adding water, stir the mixture very well. So that it should not stick to the bottom of the pressure cooker.

SERVING SUGGESTION
Garnish oats khichdi with some chopped vegetable of your choice and coriander leaves. Pour some ghee on hot Oats Khichdi and serve with curd or plain yogurt.
