Masala Khichdi Recipe, How to make Masala Khichdi

Masala Khichdi is a spicy version of simple khichdi. It is basically prepared from rice and lentils. I prefer making it for dinner and usually prefer moong dal over arhar dal (tuvar dal) for this preparation.
Moong dal is easy to digest and nutritious as well. It is a true one pot meal prepared in every Indian home.
There are many variations for this khichdi. You can add some veggies to this like peas, carrots, potatoes etc. In this recipe khichdi will not be mushy but fluffy, perfectly cooked each grain.

Step by step masala khichdi recipe:
  1. Mix rice and lentil. Rinse them together 2-3 times and soak for 10 minutes.
  2. Take oil in a pressure cooker and heat it. Add cumin seeds and let it splutter. Add bay leaf and chopped onion. Fry it for 2 minute and add peanuts. Fry both till they are light golden brown.
  3. Now add chopped potato and sauté for a minute and add tomatoes.Cook till the tomatoes are soft. Now add dry spices- turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala and salt followed by drained rice and lentil.
  4. Mix it well with all the masala and stir it with light hands for 2-3 minute in the masala.
  5. Pour 2 ¾ cup water and stir.
  6. Cover the lid and cook until 2 whistle on low to medium heat.
  7. Masala Khichdi is ready to serve. Garnish it some chopped coriander leaves.

Spicy lentil and rice Khichdi.

INGREDIENTS (measuring cup used, 1 cup=240 ml)
  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/3 cup moong dal (with or without skin)
  • ½ cup onion, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup tomatoes, chopped
  • ¼ cup potatoes, chopped
  • ¼ cup peanuts
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds/jeera
  • 1-2 bay leaf
  • ½ tsp green chili, chopped
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ¾ tsp red chili powder
  • ½ tsp garam masala
  • ½ tsp salt or as per taste
  • 2 tbsp. oil
